Sustainable development is reflected in the current and future focus of national government policy agendas and international interstate policies. Over the past three decades, governments and global institutions have made significant progress in promoting sustainability, acknowledging the growing challenges posed by climate change, the planet’s finite capacity and the degradation of ecosystems. In 2019, the European Union launched a comprehensive strategy to promote green growth, with the aim of transforming its economy into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economic system, with the aim of ensuring long-term environmental protection and sustainable prosperity for future generations. All Member States of the European Union are committed to achieving the objectives of a sustainable Europe and to contributing to global sustainable development. This study applies a qualitative approach to review, analyse and compare the legal framework of the European Union with the national strategies undertaken by Member States in relation to sustainable development. Current economic systems often encourage overconsumption, weaken environmental integrity and deplete natural resources that are difficult to recover. Addressing these challenges requires a renewed global economic vision that promotes shared prosperity while respecting the ecological limits of the planet by all countries and advancing the principles of sustainable development.
