Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the significance of negotiation and the negotiator as crucial instruments in resolving conflicts. Negotiation serves as a primary method for managing and resolving disputes. Historical practices of negotiation have highlighted various tactics that should be considered when choosing appropriate strategies for specific negotiations. Not every tactic is suitable for all negotiation scenarios. The choice of tactics must align with the type, form, nature, and style of the negotiations at hand. For centuries, negotiations have been associated with diplomacy, which has been regarded as vital for preventing war and fostering peace. Negotiations can facilitate agreements that benefit all involved parties. At the heart of this process is the principle of exchanging ideas. This implies that each participant must relinquish something to receive mutual insights and perspectives. In any diplomatic dialogue, it is understood that force is the final resort to consider. The essence of diplomacy lies in retaining the potential use of force, thereby convincing the opponent of its ever-present possibility and employing it only as a last measure. Negotiation forms the core of a diplomat's duties. Each profession is personified through individuals, and every professional possesses unique characteristics that distinguish them from others, primarily shaped by the nature of their work. Diplomacy, as the skill of negotiation, has cultivated the esteemed role of the diplomat, emphasizing the importance of the negotiator in lengthy negotiation processes. A critical aspect of this paper is the examination of the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Palestine conflicts. In both situations, third parties have intervened to either resolve the conflict or mitigate adverse outcomes. Our information-gathering and analytical efforts are based on an ontological and epistemological framework, employing qualitative methods such as descriptive, logical, comparative, and historical approaches. Following the comprehensive analysis, we present applicable theoretical and practical conclusions.
